My high school instituted mixed "rap" groups after a student died of a heroine overdose. This was in 1970, and "rap" had a different meaning. Attendance was compulsory and the stated focus was on substance use/dependance all of which created much initial resistance. Over time, however, students warmed to the opportunity and began to talk about meaningful issues: relationships with parents, college prospects or lack thereof, fears about academic and social performance, etc. Oddly, the school dis-continued these groups at the end of the year. There was no further mention of them! So a door opened then shut abruptly, leaving students feeling more betrayed by the administration.
